    IELTS Exam Courses Overview

    • The DLTC offers part-time English language courses in the evenings to prepare students for the IELTS exam. The courses can be either 3 hours per week (one night) or 6 hours per week (2 nights).
    • These courses begin at specific times of the year and the shortest period is for 10 weeks.
    • Students can study for the exams at the DLTC and then apply to sit the exam at University College Dublin which administers IELTS exams in Dublin. For more information on exams, timetables, and exam fees, see UCD Applied Language Centre Examinations - IELTS.
    • The classes cover the four IELTS skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. While there is no specific grammar component to an IELTS exam, students are expected to use the grammar properly in context so English grammar is also covered in these classes.
    • The courses prepare for both the Academic and General IELTS exam format on different nights so be sure to ask us about this.
    • A good level of English is required to prepare for the IELTS so students you will have to successfully complete a level test to attend these courses. The level required to attend is a good Upper-Intermediate to Advanced level.
    • Maximum class size is 11 students per class although the average is often only 7 students per class.
    • Additional homework will be provided for students to complete.
    • Classes are also open to those who do not wish to sit the exams but want to improve their English.
    • Classes include a short break when coffee, tea and soft-drinks are available.

    What is IELTS?

IELTS is the International English Language Testing System. It measures ability to communicate in English across all four language skills – listening, reading, writing and speaking – for people who intend to study or work where English is the language of communication. More than 6,000 education institutions, faculties, government agencies and professional organisations around the world recognise IELTS scores as a trusted and valid indicator of ability to communicate in English. The test is taken every year across 120 countries, and is one of the fastest growing English language tests in the world, and sets the standard in integrity, research and innovation. You can prepare for this exam at the DLTC and then sit the exam at UCD University College Dublin (the main provider of IELTS exams in Dublin). Unlike other Cambridge exams, there is an exam available approximately every 2 or 4 weeks - so you can take the exam when you want!
